REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
-
Remove the transaxle, following procedures outlined in .
-
For cars equipped with automatic transaxle:
-
Matchmark the driveplate and the crankshaft.
-
Loosen the retaining bolts a little at a time and in a criss-cross pattern. Support the driveplate as the last bolts are removed and then lift the driveplate away from the engine.
-
For manual transaxle cars:
-
Matchmark the pressure plate assembly and the flywheel.
-
Loosen the pressure plate retaining bolts a little at a time and in a criss-cross pattern. Support the pressure plate and clutch assembly as the last bolt is removed and lift them away from the flywheel.
-
Matchmark the flywheel and crankshaft. Loosen the retaining bolts evenly and in a criss-cross pattern. Support the flywheel during removal of the last bolts and remove the flywheel.
-
Carefully inspect the teeth on the flywheel or driveplate for any signs of wearing or chipping. If anything beyond minimal contact wear is found, replace the unit.
Since the flywheel is driven by the starter gear, you would be wise to inspect the starter drive if any wear is found on the flywheel teeth. A worn starter can cause damage to the flywheel.
To install:
-
Place the flywheel or driveplate in position on the crankshaft and make sure the matchmarks align. Install the retaining bolts finger tight.
-
Tighten the bolts in a diagonal pattern and in three passes. Tighten the flywheel bolts (manual) or the driveplate bolts (automatic) to specifications.
-
Install the clutch and pressure plate assembly. Tighten all mounting bolts to specifications.
If the clutch appears worn or cracked in any way, replace it with a new disc, pressure plate and release bearing. The slight extra cost of the parts will prevent having to remove the transaxle again later.
-
Reinstall the transaxle assembly. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.
RING GEAR REPLACEMENT
If the ring gear teeth on the driveplate or flywheel are damaged, the unit must be replaced. The ring gear cannot be separated or reinstalled individually.
If a flywheel is replaced on a manual transaxle vehicle, the installation of a new clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing is highly recommended.
