Check the bearing backlash and axle hub deviation. Place a dual indicator near the center of the axle hub, and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction. Maximum is 0.0020 inch (0.05mm). If backlash exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub with bearing.
Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt. Maximum is 0.0028 inch (0.07mm). If the deviation exceeds the maximum., replace the axle hub with bearing.
Remove the ABS speed sensor if equipped.
Disconnect the hydraulic brake line.
Remove the 4 axle hub and carrier mounting bolts and O-ring. Remove the axle hub and brake assembly.
The bearing assembly can be replaced by removing staked nut, bearing races, seal and pressing bearing in and out. Tighten the bearing assembly retaining nut to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm) then stake the lock nut.
At this point of the service remove the rear axle carrier by following this procedure:
Remove the strut rod mounting bolt from the axle carrier.
Remove all rear suspension arm mounting bolts from the axle carrier.
Remove the 2 axle carrier mounting bolts from the shock absorber. Remove the rear axle carrier assembly from vehicle.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Install new O-ring in axle carrier. Torque the rear axle carrier to shock absorber to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm) and the 4 axle hub retaining bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm). Attach the speed sensor, tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
Bounce the car rear and front several times to position the suspension. Tighten the strut rod-to-axle carrier to 67 ft. lbs. (91 Nm) and the No. 1 and No. 2 arm-to-axle carrier to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm). Check rear wheel alignment.
