REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4A-FE And 7A-FE Engines
  1. Place a drain pan below the power steering pump.
    2.  
  2. Remove the clamp from the fluid return hose. Disconnect the pressure and return hoses at the pump. Plug the hoses and suspend them with the ends upward to prevent leakage.
    3.  
  3. Remove the adjusting bolt.
    4.  
  4. Remove the pivot bolt and remove the drive belt.
    5.  
  5. Remove the pump assembly.
    6.  
  6. Remove the pump bracket if necessary.
    7.  
  7. Remove the pulley if necessary. Be careful not to lose the small woodruff key (if so equipped) between the pulley and the shaft.
    8.  

To install:
  1. Install the pump pulley and the woodruff key. Tighten the pulley nut to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    2.  
  2. Install the pump bracket and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    3.  
  3. Place the pump in position and temporarily install the mounting bolts and adjusting bolt.
    4.  
  4. Install the drive belt. Adjust the belt to the proper tension. Tighten all mounting and adjusting bolts.
    5.  
  5. Connect the pressure and return lines to the pump. Tighten the banjo fitting to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Install the clamp on the return hose.
    6.  
  6. Fill the reservoir to the proper level with power steering fluid and bleed the system.
    7.  
  7. After the vehicle has been driven for about an hour, double check the belt adjustment.

4A-GE Engine
  1. Place a drain pan below the pump.
    2.  
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly if necessary.
    3.  
  3. Disconnect the return hose from the pump, then disconnect the pressure hose. Plug the lines immediately to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
    4.  
  4. Remove the splash shield under the engine.
    5.  
  5. Remove the pulley nut. Push down on the drive belt to prevent the pulley from turning.
    6.  
  6. Loosen the idler pulley nut an loosen the adjusting bolt.

  1. Remove the drive belt.
    2.  
  2. Remove the pump pulley and the woodruff key if so equipped.
    3.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower mounting bolts.
    4.  
  4. Remove the power steering pump.
    5.  

To install:
  1. Install the pump onto the engine. Tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    2.  
  2. Install the pump pulley and the woodruff key if so equipped. Tighten the pulley nut to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
    3.  
  3. Install the idler pulley bracket; tighten the 3 mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) if necessary
    4.  
  4. Connect the pressure hose and tighten the fitting to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    5.  
  5. Connect the return hose.
    6.  
  6. Adjust the belt to the proper tension.
    7.  
  7. Install the air cleaner if necessary and install the lower splash shield.
    8.  
  8. Fill the reservoir to the proper level with power steering fluid and bleed the system.
    9.  

BLEEDING

Any time the power steering system has been opened or disassembled, the system must be bled to remove any air which may be trapped in the lines. Air will prevent the system from providing the correct pressures. The correct fluid level reading will not be obtained if the system is not bled.

  1. With the engine running, turn the wheel all the way to the left and shut off the engine.
    2.  
  2. Add power steering fluid to the COLD mark on the indicator.
    3.  
  3. Start the engine and run. Stop the engine and recheck the fluid level. Add to the correct mark as needed.
    4.  
  4. Start the engine and bleed the system by turning the wheels fully from left to right 3 or 4 times.
    5.  
  5. Stop the engine and check the fluid level and condition. Fluid with air in it is a light tan color. This air must be eliminated from the system before normal operation can be obtained. Repeat until the correct fluid color and fluid level is obtained.
