REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


CAUTION
Brake pads may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surfaces. When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

This procedure is general service procedure (no factory service procedure are given). Modify the service steps as required.

  1. Elevate and safely support the car. If only the rear wheels are elevated, block the front wheels. Release the parking brake after the car is supported.

  2. Remove the rear wheel(s).

  1. If equipped with drum brakes, remove the brake drum and remove the brake shoes.
    2.  
  2. If equipped with disc brakes, remove the clip from the parking brake cable and remove the cable from the caliper assembly.
    3.  
  3. If equipped with drum brakes, remove the parking brake retaining bolts at the backing plate.
    4.  
  4. Remove any exhaust heat shields which interfere with the removal of the cable.
    5.  
  5. Remove the 2 cable clamps.
    6.  
  6. Disconnect the cable retainer.
    7.  
  7. Remove the cable from the equalizer (yoke).
    8.  

To install:
  1. Fit the end of the new cable into the equalizer and make certain it is properly seated.
    2.  
  2. Install the cable retainer, and, working along the length of the cable, install the clamps.
    3.  

Make certain the cable is properly routed and does not contain any sharp bends or kinks.

  1. Feed the cable through the backing plate and install the retaining bolts.

  2. If equipped with disc brakes, connect the cable to the arm and install the clip.
    3.  
  3. If equipped with drum brakes, re-install the shoes. The cable will be connected to the shoes during the installation process.

  4. Reinstall the wheel(s) and lower the car to the ground. Adjust the parking brake.

ADJUSTMENT

Pull the parking brake lever all the way up and count the number of clicks. The correct range is 4-7 clicks rear drum brake type and 5-8 clicks rear disc brake type for full application. A system which is too tight or too loose requires adjustment.

Before adjusting the parking brake cable, make certain that the rear brake shoe or rear brake pad clearance is correct. Refer to the necessary service procedures.

  1. Remove the center console box.

  2. At the rear of the handbrake lever, loosen the locknut on the brake cable.
    3.  
  3. Turn the adjusting nut until the parking brake travel is correct.
    4.  
  4. Tighten the locknut.
    5.  
  5. Reinstall the console.
